Key takeaways
- Start with the job and the complete purchase scope, then compare batteries or storage products.
- A low price per ampere-hour does not establish usable energy, compatibility, safety documentation or delivered cost.
- This guide is for buying decisions and supplier coordination, not instructions for assembling or wiring a battery system.
Start with the job and the complete purchase scope, then compare batteries or storage products. A low price per ampere-hour does not establish usable energy, compatibility, safety documentation or delivered cost. This guide is for buying decisions and supplier coordination, not instructions for assembling or wiring a battery system.
Our sourcing strengths include batteries, energy storage and DIY projects. Tell us the product or component required and the support you need; engineering, installation, certification and route coverage must be agreed explicitly. When the design or destination requirements are unresolved, get qualified advice before ordering.
Turn this guide into a buying request
Keep this page as context. Add what you know; review everything before sending. No purchase is made at this step.
Continue to request →-
Application and boundary
replacement battery, portable unit, stationary storage product or component; specify what you are buying and what remains with another installer or integrator.
-
Exact interface
existing manufacturer/model, stated voltage and operating requirements, physical envelope, connectors and communication requirements from the approved specification. Do not approve compatibility from an identical-looking connector.
-
Evidence
manufacturer identity, exact model and revision, datasheet, applicable test/certification documents, instructions, batch traceability and warranty terms.
-
Commercial basis
quantity, permitted substitutions, sample requirement, destination/postcode, target currency, budget and receiving date. Request the same basis from each bidder.

Who this guide is for, and when local supply is the better choice
Use it when comparing a documented finished battery, portable power product, storage-system component or repeatable project supply. It is especially useful when two quotations use different capacity units or leave accessories and freight unpriced.
Choose a locally supported complete solution when permits, installation, urgent replacement or in-person warranty service dominate the decision. Stop an import comparison if no qualified person will own the system specification or if the offered product cannot be accepted on a documented route. A cheaper component is not a substitute for a workable complete installation.
Send a brief that suppliers can quote consistently
- Application and boundary: replacement battery, portable unit, stationary storage product or component; specify what you are buying and what remains with another installer or integrator.
- Exact interface: existing manufacturer/model, stated voltage and operating requirements, physical envelope, connectors and communication requirements from the approved specification. Do not approve compatibility from an identical-looking connector.
- Evidence: manufacturer identity, exact model and revision, datasheet, applicable test/certification documents, instructions, batch traceability and warranty terms.
- Commercial basis: quantity, permitted substitutions, sample requirement, destination/postcode, target currency, budget and receiving date. Request the same basis from each bidder.
Read a real specification without turning it into a product recommendation
Published-document observation, 2 October 2026: Victron’s Lithium NG 12.8 V manual lists its 100 Ah variant as 1,280 Wh at 25 °C, with capacity conditions, and separates continuous from 10-second pulse current. In the standards rows, some entries refer to cells, some to the battery, and some are marked pending or conditional on a named BMS.
That is the useful lesson: copy the exact variant, test conditions and qualifiers into the comparison. Do not turn a cell-level entry, a pending line or a conditional configuration into a claim that the complete offered system is certified. We have not tested this product, checked its certification register or confirmed supply; this is a documentation example with no reseller affiliation implied.

Separate nominal energy from useful output and power
For comparing stated ratings, nominal Wh = nominal V × Ah. As arithmetic only, 12.8 V × 100 Ah = 1,280 Wh. Do not compare “100 Ah” across different nominal voltages as if it were the same energy.
The useful output at the load also depends on the approved operating window, conversion losses, temperature and the actual load profile. Peak power and continuous power answer different questions. Have the supplier state the conditions behind each figure; do not estimate a guaranteed runtime from a headline capacity.
Keep useful service cost separate from item cost: purchase, required accessories, review/testing, accepted freight, taxes, installation, commissioning and warranty handling. If a component is only one line in a larger project, compare the whole approved bill of materials.
A battery report is not the same as complete-system certification
UL’s published explanation separates UL 9540 system evaluation from UL 9540A thermal-runaway fire-propagation testing. A report using one method should not be relabelled as proof of an unrelated approval. The relevant requirements depend on product, configuration, intended installation and jurisdiction.
For a stationary-system proposal, ask the responsible designer or installer which exact system, battery/inverter combination, documentation and local approvals are needed. Record the model identifiers and review outcome. A claim on a seller’s listing is still unverified until the appropriate evidence is matched; a transport document does not settle installation compliance.

Transport: identify the product before requesting a route
IATA’s 2026 Battery Guidance Document distinguishes battery chemistry and whether batteries are standalone, packed with equipment or contained in equipment. Its test-summary guidance calls for identifiers that match the cell or battery. These distinctions affect the questions a qualified dangerous-goods specialist must answer; they do not give this website authority to accept a shipment.
Request a current, product-specific test summary and confirm model, report reference, battery description and test outcome against the offered goods. Share the complete product and condition honestly with the forwarder. Obtain written acceptance, packing/document responsibilities, cost and validity before purchase. Damaged, defective, recalled, prototype or changed products need a separate specialist assessment; never describe them as ordinary accessories to get a lower freight quote.

A comparison that exposes missing costs
Illustrative quotation comparison only, USD throughout, one hypothetical documented finished product to the same business address: A shows goods 900 + specified accessories 120 + review/testing allowance 100 + accepted-freight allowance 260 + destination allowance 120 = 1,500. B shows goods 820 + accessories 200 + the same review allowance 100 + freight allowance 340 + destination allowance 120 = 1,580. None of these numbers is a market price or a quote from us.
A is lower by 80 under those assumptions, but neither option is ready to buy if required tax, integration or warranty-return costs remain unknown. If A needs an extra 150 of mandatory work, its comparison becomes 1,650 and B becomes lower. This is sensitivity arithmetic, not an estimate of failure or shipping cost.
Replace every allowance with a current matched-scope quote. Confirm whether taxes are recoverable, avoid duplicate charges and compare a local supported alternative on the same complete basis. A required unknown is an open decision, not zero.
Approve or hold at four points
- Before supplier selection: the exact product and integration responsibility are defined; compare like-for-like documents and scope.
- Before purchase: specification, payee, sample/review requirements, remedies and route feasibility are accepted. Hold an unexplained change of model or document.
- Before shipment: final model/quantity, agreed evidence, labels, packing and carrier acceptance match. Hold damaged or substituted goods for specialist review.
- At receipt: follow the manufacturer’s safe receiving procedure and have the responsible qualified person manage commissioning. Record discrepancies and warranty deadlines; receipt is not automatic installation approval.
Send a sourcing request with the unresolved decisions highlighted
Send the exact model or authorised drawing, application, destination, quantity, deadline and the documents already available. Say whether you need candidate search, supplier questions, samples, documentation coordination or logistics comparison. We will need to agree what can be provided, the fee, excluded work and the next approval point.
Research scope: this guide combines a public manufacturer-document example, official scope guidance, our buying framework and a labelled hypothetical cost model. It contains no customer order, performed laboratory test, approved installation or guaranteed shipping route. Sources were reviewed on 2 October 2026; recheck model revisions, rule editions and carrier acceptance before a purchase.
Questions and answers
Common questions
- Can you source a battery for a DIY project?
- Batteries, energy storage and DIY are part of our sourcing focus. Send the exact requirement and destination so the sourcing work, specialist reviews and feasible logistics can be scoped. Do not assume assembly, wiring, installation or certification is included.
