1688.com in English

1688.com is Alibaba Group’s wholesale marketplace for buyers inside mainland China. There is no official English version of the site, no international shipping, and no checkout that accepts a foreign card — the platform was never built for buyers outside China.

You can still buy from it. Browser translation handles the reading; a China-based agent handles the parts the platform will not do for you — a domestic address, a Chinese payment method, and consolidated export shipping.

In this guide

Why there is no English 1688

Alibaba runs three marketplaces that people confuse constantly. Alibaba.com is the export platform, in English, priced for international buyers and built around trade assurance. Taobao is consumer retail. 1688.com is the wholesale tier that Chinese retailers, factories and resellers buy from, and it assumes every buyer has a mainland address, a Chinese phone number and an Alipay account.

That assumption is the whole reason the prices are lower. 1688 listings carry no export margin, no English support cost and no international payment fees, because none of those were ever part of the product.

How much cheaper is it, really

For identical goods from the same factory, 1688 is typically 30–70% below Alibaba.com and below Taobao. The gap is widest on commodity categories with many competing sellers, and narrowest on items where one factory holds the mould or the licence.

The saving is real but it is not the whole number. Agent service fee, domestic freight to the agent’s warehouse, consolidation, and international shipping all land on top. On small orders those costs can erase the gap entirely — which is why the landed cost, not the listing price, is the number worth comparing.

Reading the site without Chinese

  • Chrome and Edge translate 1688 pages inline. Accuracy is good enough for navigation and poor for specifications — never accept a translated material or dimension without confirming it.
  • Search works better with Chinese keywords. Translating your English term first, then pasting the Chinese, returns a different and usually much larger result set.
  • Prices shown are per-unit at the listed tier. A listing reading ¥12.80 is renminbi per piece, and the tier usually changes at 2, 10, 50 and 100 pieces.
  • Images are the most reliable part of a listing. Specification tables are frequently copied between sellers and are not evidence.

The three ways foreign buyers order

A China-based agent is the common route. You send the product link, the agent buys it to their warehouse using a domestic account, inspects it, consolidates it with anything else you ordered, and ships it out under one export document. You pay the agent, in your own currency.

A freight forwarder with a purchase service is the same shape but weighted toward logistics rather than sourcing — better when you already know exactly what you want and are shipping a lot of it.

Direct purchase works only if you have a mainland address and an Alipay account, usually through a contact in China. It is the cheapest path and the one with no recourse if the goods are wrong.

What goes wrong

  • Minimum order quantities are set per listing and are often invisible until checkout. Many are low — 2 to 10 pieces — but some are 500.
  • Sellers on 1688 include trading companies reselling other factories’ goods. The listing does not tell you which you are talking to.
  • Specifications in the description are often inherited from a template. Weight in particular is frequently wrong, and weight is what your freight bill is calculated on.
  • Batteries, liquids, powders, branded goods and anything with a logo have export restrictions that the listing will not mention.

Questions & answers

Common questions

Is there an official 1688 English site?
No. Any site presenting itself as “1688 in English” is a third-party agent or a translation layer, not an Alibaba product.
Can 1688 ship to my country directly?
Almost never. A small number of sellers offer export shipping, but the platform has no general international delivery and no foreign-card checkout.
Do I need to speak Chinese?
To browse, no. To negotiate, confirm a specification or resolve a dispute, yes — that is the part an agent is actually doing for you.
Is 1688 safe?
The platform is legitimate and operated by Alibaba Group. Individual sellers vary enormously, and the platform’s buyer protection is built for domestic disputes you cannot easily file from abroad.

Your next step

Have a link you want checked?

Send a 1688 or Taobao product link and you get back the specification in English, the supplier check, and the landed cost to your country before you commit to anything.
